What is radiant barrier foil?
Radiant Barrier Foil is used to reflect radiant heat away from your home. There are two types of heat that can enter your home, conductive heat and radiant heat.
Conductive Heat is heat that is transfered through solid objects. The insulation in your home is used to prevent that heat from penetrating into the house. Radiant heat is heat that is transfered through space, such as heat generated when sunlight hits a surface. Radiant barrier foil is used to reflect 97% of this radiant heat which leads to less conductive heat and keeps your attic and home cooler.
How will this save me money?
Running the A/C in your house is typically the largest consumer of electricity in your home, especially in South Florida. The hotter it is inside of your home your A/C unit will have to run harder and for more time. Having good insulation is important as it will keep a lot of heat from transfering to inside the house, but your attic will still heat up, sometimes up to 130 (degrees). Adding radiant barrier foil will reflect 97% of the radiant heat which will do 2 things: 1. Keep your attic cooler and 2. keep your home cooler by reducing the amount of heat that can transfer through the insulation. Because your A/C ducts are usually found in the attic, it is important to keep the attic from getting too hot and heating up the air going through the A/C ducts.
